This coffee, sourced from farmers tending 1 to 2 hectares each, represents the potential of Tanzania's often-overlooked coffee sector.

 

Origin and Cultivation

Our Tanzania Peaberry Coffee is cultivated in the lush regions of Songwe and Ruvuma. Farmers here grow coffee alongside corn, beans, groundnuts, sunflowers, ginger, and Pyrethrum Daisy, known for its natural insecticidal properties. The coffee cherries are hand-harvested and processed individually on each farm. Typically, the cherries are pulped using eco-pulpers or standard pulpers, fermented, and dried on raised beds for 14-20 days. Once dried, the parchment rests for 2-3 months in cooperative warehouses before being milled in Mbozi or Mbinga.

The Unique Peaberry

Peaberries are a natural mutation found in about 5% of all coffee cherries. Unlike the usual two beans, a peaberry cherry contains only one, resulting in a rounder and denser bean. This unique shape allows for a more even roast, often leading to a sweeter flavor profile. Peaberries must be carefully sorted during the dry milling process using specialized screens.

Rich Tanzanian Heritage

Tanzania Coffee heritage dates back to the 16th century with the Haya tribe. Over time, the coffee industry has evolved through German and British colonial periods to today's thriving smallholder farms. Initially concentrated in the northern regions, coffee cultivation has expanded southward to Songwe and Ruvuma, now contributing 75-85% of Tanzania's total production.
